Bonding

The bonding technique involves adhering a composite resin (glass and plastic) material to your tooth. The material is color matched to your tooth so that it looks like part of your natural tooth. The bonding procedure is indicated when a tooth is repaired after removal of decay, to realign a tooth or close a space, to repair a fractured tooth or to proceed with desired cosmetic treatment.

The technique involves micro etching the surface of the tooth with micro sized particles of aluminum oxide powder (sand) the surface is then etched with a gel of a mild acid (phosphoric acid) that will not harm you or the tooth. The tooth now has micro porosities to a depth of about 30 microns (1/30 of a mm). A liquid bonding agent is then placed that attaches to your tooth by filling up the porosities and it also chemically adheres to your tooth structure.

The bonded tooth like putty is then added, and it attaches to these chemicals. All of the materials are hardened by using a bonding light which emits a wavelength of light that hardens all the products. The filling is then contoured and polished.
